Jeddah Grand Prix F1H2O Highlights Saudi Arabia's Emergence As A Global Sports Destination

Jeddah is set to host the fourth round of the UIM F1H2O World Championship, known as the Grand Prix of Jeddah, from November 27 to 30. This event is part of Jeddah Season 2025 and marks a significant milestone for the city. It highlights Saudi Arabia's growing prominence as a global hub for international competitions.

The championship is renowned as the premier series in single-seater powerboat racing. It features intense competition among top international drivers. The race lasts about 30 minutes on a protected water course, with points awarded to the top ten finishers. The winner receives 20 points, while second and third places earn 15 and 12 points, respectively.

Jeddah's strategic location enhances its reputation as a city that blends sports, entertainment, and maritime activities. This modern identity positions it as a major centre for large-scale events. The official announcement of Jeddah hosting this event came after a special ceremony in Shanghai, China. During this ceremony, the Saudi delegation received the championship flag from Nicolo di San Germano, Founder and President of F1H2O Racing.

Since 2024, the championship has introduced two sprint races to determine starting positions. Drivers are divided into two groups for these short rounds, which offer additional points. This change adds tactical depth and increases competition among participants.

The boats used in the championship have evolved significantly since the 1980s. Initially made of plywood with open cockpits, they now feature closed cockpits that are impact-resistant. Advanced flotation systems and internal harnesses ensure driver safety during capsizes.

The Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM) employs a precise starting system for races. A two-minute warning precedes a 30-second countdown before boats launch from the platform at high speed.

High-Speed Racing Dynamics

Competitors in this championship reach impressive speeds during races. Boats can achieve up to 145 km/h in sharp turns and exceed 226 km/h on straight sections. The world-record top speed stands at an astonishing 261 km/h.

This event not only showcases thrilling marine sports but also underscores Jeddah’s role on the international stage. It reflects Saudi Arabia's commitment to hosting prestigious global competitions and enhancing its status as an international destination.
