Jeddah Culture Square: Blending Heritage With Modern Art And Innovation

Culture Square in Jeddah Historic District is a key cultural hub, reflecting Saudi Arabia's aim to blend heritage with modern art and creativity. Spanning over 26,000 square meters, it hosts the Red Sea International Film Festival, teamLab Borderless art museum, a performing arts center, and Bait Amir Al Bahar. This fusion of traditional architecture and contemporary culture creates a unique experience.

The performing arts center occupies around 16,000 square meters. It includes a main theater seating 868 people, five cinema halls with 564 seats combined, nine cultural dialogue rooms, a multi-purpose lounge, a restaurant, and three cafés. These facilities serve as lively venues for community and cultural events.

teamLab Borderless covers 10,000 square meters and features over 80 interactive digital artworks. This makes it one of the most significant modern art experiences in Saudi Arabia. The museum offers visitors an immersive journey through innovative digital creations.

Bait Amir Al Bahar is a heritage building from the last century at the heart of Culture Square. Restored meticulously, it connects visitors to Jeddah’s maritime history. Known for its octagonal shape and large arched windows, it once served as a lighthouse guiding ships along the Red Sea coast.

The design of Culture Square mirrors the architectural identity of Jeddah's historic district but reimagined in a modern way. The Ministry of Culture adopted vertical building styles inspired by ancient homes. Irregular facades use push-and-pull techniques to enhance shadow play.

Wooden windows in various shapes, traditional arches, and covered balconies add visual richness while improving natural ventilation. This approach reshapes the area's aesthetic character while respecting its historical roots.

Sustainability Initiatives

The Ministry of Culture emphasized environmental sustainability and advanced technologies in developing Culture Square. Innovations include air purification systems, touchless elevators, UV-sterilized staircases, and recycling cooling water for irrigation.
