Jazan Watermelon Farmers Anticipate Record Harvest To Meet Ramadan Demand

Farmers in Jazan have started harvesting watermelons, expecting a larger yield this year. This increase is to meet the high demand during Ramadan. With 14,000 hectares dedicated to watermelon cultivation, the region anticipates producing over 15,000 tons. Retailers are distributing the harvest across various regions and governorates in Saudi Arabia, supplying both wholesale and retail markets.

The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture is working to improve watermelon production through its Sustainable Agricultural Rural Development Program (Saudi Reef). This initiative aims to enhance food security and expand cultivation throughout the Kingdom. Key areas for growing watermelons include Riyadh, Al-Jouf, Hail, Makkah, Qassim, and Jazan.

Jazan Farmers Expect Record Watermelon Harvest

The cultivation process for watermelons spans 90 days. Seeds are planted after rainfall or with controlled irrigation. These fruits are resilient to drought and humidity. They thrive in light, well-drained sandy soil enriched with organic matter. Each vine can grow up to three meters long and produce five to seven fruits.

A tour by the Saudi Press Agency in Sabya governorate highlighted an abundance of watermelons in local markets. These fruits are valued for their refreshing qualities in hot weather. Rich in vitamins, they help boost immunity, support brain health, and may prevent dehydration.

Watermelon prices vary based on size and quality. The ongoing harvest is being transported to different regions within the Kingdom. This ensures a steady supply to both wholesale and retail outlets. The high demand during Ramadan further influences market dynamics.

To promote watermelon season, the ministry organises festivals featuring exhibitions, entertainment, cultural events, and agricultural workshops. These activities support local farmers by facilitating product marketing. They also aim to increase local production as part of Vision 2030's goals to diversify the economy and enhance non-oil domestic products.

In conclusion, Jazan's watermelon farmers are gearing up for a productive season with increased yields expected this year. The Ministry's initiatives play a crucial role in supporting these efforts while contributing to broader economic goals.
