Jawaher Al Qasimi Advocates For Cultural Dialogue At Inaugural Arabic Cultural Institute Conference In Milan
H.H. Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, wife of H.H. the Ruler of Sharjah and Chairperson of the Rubu' Qarn Foundation, attended the inaugural conference of the Arabic Cultural Institute in Milan. The event was initiated by H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, under the Sharjah Book Authority last August.
The institute is located at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan. It is Italy's first centre dedicated to fostering dialogue between Arab and Western cultures while celebrating Arab achievements in science and arts. Sheikha Jawaher explored its departments and year-round programmes during her visit.

Sheikha Jawaher emphasised the institute's crucial role in promoting Arabic language and literature across Europe, especially among youth. She praised the vision of the Ruler of Sharjah for creating a project that builds cultural bridges and strengthens Arab culture’s voice within global dialogue.
At a symposium titled ‘Design as a Means of Communication,’ Sheikha Jawaher reflected on fashion design’s historical impact as a cultural bridge. She noted how Arab culture has both influenced and absorbed influences from others over centuries, enriching cultural exchange when it respects each nation’s heritage.
Sheikha Jawaher also highlighted the work of the Irthi Contemporary Crafts Council, which she founded to advance Emirati crafts through collaborations in fields like fashion and jewellery. Irthi has successfully introduced Emirati craftsmanship to both Eastern and Western audiences, showcasing Emirati heritage at prestigious international venues.
The conference featured a film screening of "Khorfakkan," based on H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan Al Qasimi’s book about Khorfakkan's resistance against the Portuguese invasion in September 1507. Attendees included Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Ameri, CEO of SBA; Dr. Wael Farouq, Director of the Arabic Cultural Institute; Mario Gatti, Director of the Catholic University; media personality Mona El Shazly; Italian academics; cultural officials; and students from the university.
Cultural Exchange Through Design
The symposium ‘Design as a Means of Communication’ opened with discussions led by Marco Samichelli, Director of the Italian Design Museum in Milan, and Dr. Maria Teresa Zanola, Professor at the Catholic University. They explored how design transcends language barriers, acting as a universal language that connects communities through visual narratives.
This was followed by a workshop titled ‘Exploring the Concept of the Other,’ led by Don Ambrogio Pisoni from the Catholic University. The session focused on cross-cultural dynamics in workplaces, encouraging mutual understanding and valuing socio-cultural backgrounds that shape individuals.
Fostering Dialogue and Understanding
Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Ameri stated, "The Arab Cultural Institute embodies a gateway to Arab thought and creativity for the Western world." He added that it fosters dialogue, mutual respect, and recognition of civilisational contributions in shaping human history.
Mario Gatti welcomed Sheikha Jawaher to the conference, commending Sharjah's leadership for elevating Arabic language globally. He highlighted that this institute serves as a cornerstone for bridging Arab and Western cultures while sparking interest among students in exploring Arabic heritage.
The sessions underscored design's role in bridging cultures through diversity and fostering interconnected global dialogue. Participants discussed how embracing 'The Other' enhances personal growth and builds inclusive environments.
Students involved in founding the institute were honoured for their vital role in realising its vision and fostering its cultural initiatives.
