ITU Commends Saudi Arabia For Leading Digital Circular Economy Regulations And Sustainability Efforts

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has praised Saudi Arabia's initiatives, led by the Communications, Space and Technology Commission (CST), for setting up regulations in the digital circular economy. A recent ITU report highlights Saudi Arabia's proactive measures to develop standards aimed at reducing global e-waste, showcasing the country's commitment to digital sustainability and eco-friendly practices.

The report, released on International E-Waste Day, emphasized the collaboration between CST and ITU to tackle e-waste issues in developing countries. Initial efforts are focused on Rwanda, Zambia, and Paraguay. The partnership aims to work with local stakeholders to implement solutions that align technological progress with sustainable practices.

Saudi Arabia's Leadership in Digital Sustainability Praised by ITU

According to the report, forming effective partnerships is crucial to addressing one of the fastest-growing environmental challenges globally. By working with local partners and stakeholders, a brighter future can be achieved for all. The initiative's progress in Rwanda was highlighted, where a circular framework has been established to support environmental sustainability and economic growth.

"Zambia is working to finalize a framework that addresses the needs of stakeholders," the report stated. "Paraguay aims to involve local producers and stakeholders in the regulatory framework for e-waste and gather their feedback on it." These efforts demonstrate a commitment to involving local communities in creating effective solutions.

CST previously launched the "Recycle Your Device" initiative, marking Saudi Arabia's first national effort dedicated to recycling electronic devices. This initiative has successfully collected over 100,000 devices and recycled more than 240 tons of e-waste. It also supported over 120 schools and charitable organizations with recycled devices.

The initiative contributed significantly to reducing carbon emissions, helping mitigate global warming by approximately 0.03°C. Such efforts underscore Saudi Arabia's dedication to fostering a sustainable digital future while addressing pressing environmental concerns.

Global E-Waste Challenge

The ITU report noted that globally, 62 billion kg of e-waste were produced in 2022, with less than 23% being recycled. "CST is taking proactive steps, in collaboration with the ITU, to change this situation and promote a sustainable digital future," it stated. These actions highlight the importance of international cooperation in tackling global e-waste challenges.

By establishing regulations for the digital circular economy, Saudi Arabia sets an example for other nations aiming for digital sustainability. The country's efforts reflect its commitment to adopting environmentally friendly practices while supporting technological advancement.
