Ithra Engages At ICOM General Conference In Dubai To Explore Future Of Museums
The King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture, known as Ithra, is taking part in the 27th ICOM General Conference. This event, titled "ICOM Dubai 2025," is scheduled from November 11 to 17 in Dubai. It marks the first time this triennial conference is hosted in the Middle East. The theme focuses on "The Future of Museums in Rapidly Changing Communities."
Ithra's involvement includes presenting three research papers at the conference. These papers are titled "Sustainability of the Craft: Ithra Museum Methodology as a Model for Cultural Heritage and Sustainable Work," "The Power of Independence through Educating Unskilled Employees to Highly Skilled Professionals at Ithra Museum," and "Hijrah: In the Footsteps of the Prophet." These contributions aim to share insights into cultural heritage and sustainable practices.

Farah Abushullaih, Head of Museum at Ithra, stated that their participation aims to foster idea exchange, build partnerships, and demonstrate how heritage can blend with innovation. This is showcased through artistic and craft practices like "Hijrah: In the Footsteps of the Prophet," the Ithra Art Prize, and the Khoos Initiative.
At their pavilion, Ithra highlights its curatorial approach across various domains such as art, craft, collections, and education. Three significant projects are showcased: "Khoos," "In Praise of the Artisan," and "Hijrah: In the Footsteps of the Prophet." These projects illustrate how Ithra bridges tangible heritage with modern creative practices.
Ithra's participation also features a screening of "Sa’fa" (A Frond), a short film by Mahmoud Kaabour. This film poetically explores palm-frond weaving in Al-Ahsa Oasis, which is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The film adds a visual dimension to Ithra's cultural narrative at the conference.
The ICOM General Conference is one of the world's major museum gatherings. It occurs every three years and serves as a platform for museums globally to discuss future directions and challenges within rapidly evolving communities.
Ithra’s engagement in this prestigious event underscores how it connects traditional heritage with contemporary innovation. By participating in discussions and showcasing projects, Ithra aims to contribute significantly to conversations about museums' roles in changing societies.
