IMCTC Initiates Comprehensive Counter-Terrorism Programme In Sahel With Saudi Arabia's Support
The Islamic Military Counter Terrorism Coalition (IMCTC) has initiated a program to combat terrorism in the Sahel region, with the launch taking place in Nouakchott, Mauritania. The event was attended by Mauritanian Minister of Defense Hanena Ould Sidi and IMCTC Secretary-General Major General Pilot Mohammed bin Saeed Al-Moghedi, along with various Mauritanian government officials and ambassadors from member states.
In his address, Mauritania's defense minister highlighted terrorism as a significant threat to humanity, especially in the Sahel. He underscored the necessity for collective efforts to ensure the program's success. Meanwhile, Major General Al-Moghedi described the initiative as a foundational step towards regional stability and combating terrorism. He emphasized that it aligns with the Sahel countries' needs through four main pillars: ideological, media, countering terrorism financing, and military.

The IMCTC secretary-general stressed that the Sahel is pivotal in fighting terrorism. The coalition's dedication to this area demonstrates its commitment to partnership and cooperation for achieving security and peace. The newly launched programs aim to build sustainable local capabilities, empowering communities to tackle terrorist challenges effectively.
An introductory film about the IMCTC was shown at the event. Established by Saudi Arabia's initiative and announced by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in December 2015, the coalition aims for global leadership against terrorism through organized collective action. As of 2024, it includes 42 member countries.
The program will run for five years, beginning in Mauritania. It comprises 239 activities designed to enhance agencies' efficiency in combating terrorism, strengthen their capabilities, counter terrorist ideologies, and raise awareness about its dangers. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia supports this initiative financially and logistically.
Saudi Minister of Defense Prince Khalid bin Salman announced during a meeting in Riyadh that Saudi Arabia would contribute SAR 100 million towards funding these initiatives. Additionally, Saudi Arabia will offer 46 training programs across IMCTC’s areas of work as part of its contribution alongside other member countries.
The launch marks a new phase of joint efforts aimed at building local capabilities that empower communities to confront terrorist challenges effectively. This initiative reflects IMCTC’s comprehensive vision to counter terrorism in all forms while enhancing regional stability through strategic partnerships.
