IOM Highlights Urgent Need For Shelter As Winter Impacts Displaced Palestinians In Gaza

The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) has expressed grave concern over the severe winter conditions affecting displaced Palestinians in Gaza. The harsh weather, including heavy rains and freezing temperatures, has exacerbated an already dire humanitarian situation. "Vulnerable people, including at least seven infants, have died from hypothermia, and these tragic deaths underscore the urgent need for shelter and other help to get to the people of Gaza immediately," said Amy Pope, IOM Director-General.

Flooding and heavy rains have severely impacted displacement sites and makeshift shelters. Families are left exposed to harsh conditions as they struggle to repair damaged tents. According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), systematic access constraints have significantly hindered aid delivery. Since September 2024, only 285,000 people have received shelter support.

IOM Urges Aid for Displaced Palestinians in Gaza

The Shelter Cluster, a coordination group comprising UN, international, and local humanitarian organisations, estimates that at least 945,000 individuals urgently require winterisation assistance. Essential items like thermal clothing, blankets, and tarps are needed to protect shelters from rain and cold. Despite efforts to deliver aid, many remain without these critical supplies.

Since mid-November, IOM has managed to deliver nearly 180,000 emergency shelter items to partners within Gaza. However, over 1.5 million additional winter supplies remain stuck at warehouses and entry points due to severe access restrictions. These include sealing-off kits, tents, and bedding kits essential for those in need.

Call for Ceasefire and Humanitarian Access

IOM continues to call urgently for a ceasefire to facilitate the safe delivery of life-saving aid. The organisation also urges all parties involved to adhere strictly to international humanitarian law. This includes ensuring civilian protection, releasing hostages, and allowing safe and sustained humanitarian access.

The IOM's appeal highlights the critical need for immediate action to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. With winter conditions worsening the situation for displaced Palestinians, timely intervention is crucial to prevent further loss of life and alleviate suffering.
