IOM Highlights Urgent Humanitarian Needs For Displaced Palestinians Amid Winter Rains And Freezing Temperatures

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has raised serious concerns about the harsh winter conditions affecting displaced Palestinians in Gaza. The combination of heavy rains and freezing temperatures has worsened an already severe humanitarian crisis. "Vulnerable people, including at least seven infants, have died from hypothermia, and these tragic deaths underscore the urgent need for shelter and other help to get to the people of Gaza immediately," said IOM Director General Amy Pope.

Heavy rainfall has led to flooding in displacement sites, leaving families exposed to extreme weather. Many are struggling to repair their makeshift shelters, which have been damaged over time. According to the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), access restrictions have significantly hampered aid delivery. Since September 2024, only 285,000 individuals have received shelter kits, while at least 945,000 still require urgent winterization assistance.

IOM Urges Aid for Displaced Palestinians This Winter

IOM has managed to deliver nearly 180,000 emergency shelter items to partners within Gaza since mid-November. However, over 1.5 million additional winter supplies remain stuck in warehouses due to severe access limitations. The organization is calling for a ceasefire to allow safe and immediate delivery of essential aid to those in dire need.

In a related development, UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq warned that proposed Israeli legislation could lead to the collapse of UNRWA operations. This would further worsen the plight of Palestinians by cutting off crucial services such as education and healthcare. Haq emphasized that UNRWA serves as a vital lifeline for millions of Palestinians.

UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini expressed concerns about the impending Israeli occupation legislation. He stated that it aims to erase Palestinian history and identity. Lazzarini reaffirmed UNRWA's commitment to remain operational and urged international support for Palestinian refugees' rights and welfare.

The situation in Gaza highlights the urgent need for international intervention and support. Without immediate action, the humanitarian crisis is likely to worsen as winter conditions persist. The call for a ceasefire remains critical to ensure life-saving aid reaches those most affected by this ongoing crisis.
