Muslim Council Of Elders Calls For Global Tolerance And Coexistence On International Day For Tolerance
The Muslim Council of Elders, led by Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, urges global leaders to prioritise tolerance and coexistence. They stress rejecting violence and conflict, which destabilise societies and drain resources, posing threats to future generations. The Council believes tolerance is crucial for breaking cycles of war and ending the suffering of innocent victims worldwide.
In a statement for the International Day for Tolerance on November 16, the Council emphasised that tolerance is not just an ethical choice but a human duty. It is essential for societal stability and progress, forming the foundation of genuine peace. This peace can restore balance to humanity while spreading compassion, justice, and hope globally.

The Council highlights Islam as a religion of peace and mercy that denounces hatred and hostility. It advocates for peaceful coexistence among people of different races, religions, and cultures. The Quranic verse "We have created you from male and female and made you into nations and tribes, so that you may know one another" (Surah Al-Hujurat, 49:13) underscores the importance of understanding among nations.
The Muslim Council of Elders has worked extensively to promote tolerance, coexistence, and acceptance. Their efforts led to the Document on Human Fraternity's launch in Abu Dhabi in 2019. Co-signed by Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb and Pope Francis, it calls on leaders to foster values of tolerance and peace actively.
The document urges immediate action to end bloodshed, resolve conflicts, and address critical issues like climate change and cultural decline. The Council believes these steps are vital for creating a more harmonious world where mutual respect prevails.
Tolerance is seen not merely as an option but as the only viable path to breaking cycles of wars affecting various parts of the world. It is key to ending ongoing suffering endured by innocent victims, impoverished individuals, vulnerable groups, and marginalised communities.
The Muslim Council of Elders continues its mission under Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb's leadership by advocating for peaceful coexistence through dialogue among diverse communities worldwide. Their initiatives aim to build bridges between different cultures while promoting mutual respect.
