International Coalition Calls For Urgent Humanitarian Action In Sudan

The United Arab Emirates, United States, Switzerland, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the African Union, and the United Nations in Switzerland have issued a joint statement on the Sudan Talks. The statement emphasises ongoing efforts to protect civilians, ensure humanitarian access, and cease hostilities in Sudan.

The delegations highlighted the urgent humanitarian needs of the Sudanese people. They stressed the importance of respecting international humanitarian law and fulfilling commitments made under the Jeddah Declaration. This includes protecting civilians and civilian infrastructure such as hospitals and schools, ensuring they are used for their intended purposes, and allowing freedom of movement for civilians.

Urgent Call for Action in Sudan

One key issue discussed was the need for safe and unhindered passage of humanitarian aid and workers through areas controlled by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). This includes routes from Gedaref through Wad Medani and Sennar.

The delegations urged the RSF to open areas under its control along these routes, particularly at the Sennar junction. Doing so would expand access to humanitarian aid for up to 12 million Sudanese across multiple states. Continued engagement with the RSF on this matter is planned.

"We welcome the presence of the RSF, their response and their readiness to take steps to further the protection of civilians and improve the humanitarian situation through additional measures," stated the joint delegation.

Ensuring Safe Passage

The delegations also welcomed news that humanitarian actors plan to move through the Adre crossing. They reiterated the need for RSF to allow safe and unhindered access for humanitarian cargo and workers once movements begin through this corridor. Both parties are reminded of their obligations under international humanitarian law to protect civilian infrastructure, including bridges and roads necessary for humanitarian access.

The delegations intend to meet with representatives from the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) as soon as they arrive or contact them in any way they choose.

Efforts continue to ensure that both parties adhere to international standards in protecting civilians and facilitating humanitarian aid. The joint statement underscores a collective commitment to improving conditions in Sudan amidst ongoing challenges.
