Riyadh Welcomes Global Talents For The 56th International Chemistry Olympiad

The 56th International Chemistry Olympiad 2024 commenced in Riyadh, featuring 333 participants from 90 nations, overseen by 260 global chemistry experts. The event is sponsored by the Minister of Education, Yousef Al-Benyan, and attended by Dr. Amal Al-Hazzaa, Secretary-General of Mawhiba, and Murhaf Al-Madani, Assistant Minister of Education for Development.

Saudi Arabia has been part of the International Chemistry Olympiad since 2011. The Kingdom has earned numerous awards for its talented students, gaining global recognition and an invitation to host this year's edition. The event is organized by the King Abdulaziz and His Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity (Mawhiba) under the theme "Build The Bonds" and will continue until July 30, with final results announced on July 28.

Global Chemistry Olympiad in Riyadh

The Olympiad is held in strategic partnership with the Ministry of Education and King Saud University. Dr. Amal Al-Hazzaa emphasized that hosting the event in Riyadh reflects Saudi Arabia's commitment to advancing scientific knowledge, supporting talented youth, and enhancing international cooperation in line with Saudi Vision 2030.

Dr. Amal Al-Hazzaa stated that this year's event extends beyond academic competition to include a diverse program allowing participants to interact with their peers globally and immerse themselves in Saudi Arabia's rich cultural heritage. She explained, "This Olympiad brings together teams from 90 countries, creating ideas and cultures. This gathering is key to solving global challenges, from sustainable energy to medical breakthroughs, through teamwork."

The Secretary-General praised the successful collaboration among strategic partners like the Ministry of Education and King Saud University. Their combined efforts have fostered a culture of excellence and creativity aligned with the goals of the Olympiad.

Achievements and Contributions

Dr. Al-Hazzaa highlighted the achievements of Saudi teams, which have won 43 awards in chemistry and 653 awards in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) Olympiads. These accomplishments showcase the potential of Saudi students to make significant contributions to the international scientific community.

She confirmed that building cross-border relationships plays a vital role in supporting the International Steering Committee. This committee coordinates efforts and supports local organizers to ensure high standards for the Olympiad.

Praise for Organization and Hospitality

Dr. JL Kiappes, Chairman of the International Steering Committee, praised Saudi hospitality and organization: "The 56th International Chemistry Olympiad will set a record for being the greatest Olympiad, but there is something we have already witnessed that is the hospitality of Saudi Arabia."

The Olympiad is exclusively sponsored by SABIC (Saudi Basic Industries Corporation). Dr. Al-Hazzaa expressed Mawhiba's gratitude to SABIC for making this event possible through their exclusive sponsorship.

The International Chemistry Olympiad is an annual competition for high school students in chemistry. It has been held in different countries since its inception in Prague in 1968.

This year's event underscores Saudi Arabia's dedication to fostering scientific excellence among youth while promoting international collaboration through such prestigious platforms.
