MBZUAI Backs Inaugural International AI Olympiad For Students In Sofia

In a pioneering move set to shape the future of artificial intelligence (AI), the first International Olympiad in AI will take place from August 9th to 15th, 2024, in Bulgaria. This unique competition, organized by the LERAI Foundation, is dedicated to high school students worldwide, aiming to spotlight and nurture the next wave of AI talent. Dr. Yova Kementchedjhieva, chair of the scientific committee for the Olympiad and an associate professor of NLP at Mohammed Bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI), emphasized the importance of engaging young minds in AI. She highlighted the competition's role in identifying exceptional talent and promoting AI education globally. The Olympiad is recognized alongside established International Science Olympiads, further underlining its significance in the scientific community.

The competition structure includes two rounds designed to challenge and expand participants' understanding of AI. Initially, teams tackle problems inspired by recent AI research, submitting their solutions as working code and model outputs. This phase allows students to work flexibly over six weeks before the Olympiad. Upon arriving at the event, they further develop their solutions, adapting them to new challenges. The second round focuses on practical applications, requiring contestants to experiment with popular AI software like Chat-GPT and Dalle-2, thereby gaining hands-on experience with real-world AI tools.
