Integrated Transport Centre Unveils World's First Modular Smart Vehicles In Abu Dhabi

The Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) in Abu Dhabi has introduced the world's first modular smart vehicles. This announcement was made during DRIFTx 2025, part of the inaugural "Abu Dhabi Autonomous Systems Week." Abu Dhabi is now the first city globally to recognise these adaptable and reconfigurable vehicles as a new category of road transport.

Developed by NExT, these modular vehicles can connect or separate based on operational needs. This innovation is supported by scientific research from institutions in New York and Abu Dhabi, international awards, and real-world trials. These studies highlight the potential for improved road efficiency, sustainability, and urban mobility flexibility.

These vehicles are designed to adapt to demand by connecting or detaching units according to passenger numbers or specific use cases. This adaptability optimises traffic flow, reduces congestion, and lowers carbon emissions efficiently. The ITC is leading this transformation with partners like Emirates Driving Company (EDC), Liftango, and Paradigma Innovation Hub.

The pilot operation of these multi-unit modular smart vehicles will take place on Yas Island. This initiative marks a significant step towards intelligent transport in Abu Dhabi's capital. Beyond improving road mobility, these vehicles are a platform for developing smart operating systems and remote-control capabilities.

Dr. Abdulla Hamad AlGhfeli, Acting Director-General of ITC, stated that the centre continues to strengthen Abu Dhabi’s role as a global leader in innovative mobility technologies through pioneering initiatives that enhance transport system efficiency and sustainability. "The adoption of modular smart vehicles represents a strategic step forward in advancing the Emirate’s vision for a more integrated and intelligent mobility ecosystem," he said.

Antonio Guadagnino, CIO of NExT, expressed excitement about contributing to a solution that requires no new infrastructure yet significantly reduces traffic congestion. He emphasised its importance for enhancing first and last mile services—key needs expected to shape mobility across Gulf countries over the next decade.

This project aligns with ITC's long-term goals to expand autonomous driving applications throughout Abu Dhabi gradually. The introduction of these modular smart vehicles signifies a transformative moment in global mobility policy and innovation.
