Innovative Public Transport Solutions Essential For Sustainable Future Cities
During the 10th Dubai International Project Management Forum (DIPMF), experts discussed the importance of making public transport the main mobility option in future cities. They emphasised its role in enhancing life quality and reducing environmental harm from private vehicle use. Achieving this requires collaboration among policymakers, regulatory bodies, and individuals to adopt public transport as a daily habit.
The panel included Abdulmuhsen Ibrahim Kalbat, CEO of the Rail Agency, RTA; Tim Papandreou, a Future of Mobility Expert; and Frank Wolters, Managing Director of TEGEL PROJEKT in Berlin. Natalie Lindo, an international journalist and media trainer, moderated the session. The experts highlighted that sustainable solutions need collective efforts from various stakeholders.

Kalbat explained the importance of enhancing public transport networks for economic and environmental benefits. He noted Dubai's recent advancements in public transport, with metro and buses becoming vital for daily commuters. He also mentioned the Dubai Metro Blue Line Project, a significant initiative aimed at supporting Dubai’s future goals.
The Blue Line will span 30 km with 14 stations. By 2040, it is expected to serve 320,000 passengers daily. This project underscores its significance as a key component of Dubai’s public transport system. Kalbat highlighted these developments as crucial for improving urban mobility and sustainability.
Tim Papandreou praised Dubai’s public transport network for providing seamless mobility to residents and visitors. He stressed that global cities should continuously focus on developing their public transport systems to improve life quality and promote environmental sustainability.
Global Cities and Public Transport Development
Papandreou pointed out that prioritising modernisation efforts is essential for cities worldwide. These improvements not only benefit residents but also help preserve the environment by reducing reliance on private vehicles.
Frank Wolters stated, "Great solutions also present great opportunities, particularly when it comes to establishing robust transport networks and promoting their regular use as a primary mode of mobility. Such solutions play a vital role in reducing environmental impacts and ensuring the planet is preserved in a sustainable state for future generations."
The discussion concluded with an emphasis on the shared responsibility of adopting public transport habits to achieve sustainable urban development goals. The panellists agreed that collaborative efforts are necessary to create effective solutions for future cities.
