Innovations In Sustainable Fuels Propel Logistics Sector Towards Significant Emission Reductions

Mariam Al-Foudery, Group Sustainability Chief at Agility Logistics, highlighted the importance of technology, renewable energy, and regulatory frameworks in making logistics more sustainable. She noted these elements are crucial for reducing carbon emissions as global demand for shipping and supply services increases. Her insights were shared during the World Future Energy Summit, part of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week.

Al-Foudery praised countries like the UAE for leading environmental policies that promote sustainable practices. She pointed out various solutions available to the logistics sector across different fields. In air cargo, Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is a key solution. Menzies Aviation, part of Agility Logistics Parks Group and a Clean Skies Alliance member, aims to boost SAF use from under 1% to 10% by 2030.

Sustainable Fuels Transform Logistics Emissions

In maritime shipping, clean or hybrid-powered vessels are seen as potential solutions for sustainability. Tristar has introduced the first hybrid electric barge in the UAE through the First Movers Coalition. This initiative marks a significant step towards cleaner maritime operations in the region.

Sustainable warehouse design is another area of focus for Agility Logistics Parks. They incorporate technologies like automated lighting and enhanced insulation, alongside renewable energy sources such as solar thermal systems. These innovations aim to reduce energy consumption and enhance operational efficiency.

Al-Foudery also discussed the challenges facing the logistics sector in meeting global sustainability goals. She identified three main obstacles: insufficient supporting laws, high technology costs, and market readiness issues. These factors hinder progress towards achieving widespread sustainability in logistics operations.

The potential of renewable energy in warehouse operations and transportation is vast, according to Al-Foudery. Countries like the UAE and India benefit from solar energy due to favourable regulatory policies. This reliance on solar power supports sustainable practices within these regions.

The logistics sector can significantly benefit from adopting sustainable practices across its various fields. By leveraging technology and renewable energy, companies can reduce their carbon footprint while meeting increasing global demands efficiently.
