Ghaf Tree Initiative Launched In Al Wathba To Enhance Sustainability And Biodiversity

TAQA Water Solutions and Royal Gardens Agricultural Contracting have partnered to establish a Ghaf tree grove in Al Wathba. This initiative is a significant move towards environmental conservation and sustainable water management. The project involves planting over 1,000 Ghaf trees near the main pumping station of the strategic tunnel, using recycled water from TAQA's advanced wastewater treatment facilities for irrigation.

Each Ghaf tree can live up to 120 years, absorbing about 4,200 tonnes of carbon dioxide throughout its life. By using recycled water for irrigation, TAQA Water Solutions showcases the potential of circular water solutions to reduce freshwater demand. The company has already achieved an 80% water recycling rate in Abu Dhabi and aims for full utilisation across various industries, aligning with the UAE’s 2050 Net Zero strategy.

Ghaf Trees to Be Planted in Al Wathba

Ahmed Al Shamsi, Managing Director and CEO of TAQA Water Solutions, stated, "Optimising our reuse of water for irrigation is a challenge that we are successfully turning into an opportunity. The Al Wathba Ghaf Grove is a great example of wastewater supporting greening efforts in urban and rural areas, helping to build a greener, more sustainable future for Abu Dhabi and the UAE. The Ghaf tree is integral to the UAE’s incredible ecosystem, and it gives us pride to play a key role in preserving the nation’s most precious natural resources through the power of sustainable water solutions."

Dr. Ahmed Al Sharafi, CEO of Royal Gardens Agricultural Contracting, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration: "We are proud to partner with TAQA Water Solutions on this inspiring project that aligns perfectly with our shared commitment to environmental sustainability. The Ghaf tree holds a special place in the UAE's natural heritage, and we are thrilled to be part of this initiative that will enhance the beauty of Abu Dhabi landmarks, and support biodiversity for years to come."

The partnership ensures effective planting and care for these trees. Completion is expected by December 2024. This project supports the UAE's goal to achieve Net Zero by 2050. Ghaf trees are resilient and act as natural carbon sinks, helping mitigate climate change effects.

Cultural Importance of the Ghaf Tree

The Ghaf tree holds cultural significance in the region. It provides shelter for various animals and plants. As the national tree of the UAE, it was chosen as a symbol during the UAE's Year of Tolerance in 2019 due to its role in stabilising desert environments.

This initiative not only enhances Abu Dhabi's landscape but also supports biodiversity conservation efforts. By focusing on sustainable practices like using recycled water for irrigation, this project sets an example for future environmental initiatives in the region.
