Indonesian Batik Art Merges With Saudi Heritage At Banan Exhibition

The Saudi International Handicrafts Week Exhibition, known as Banan, serves as a lively venue for cultural interaction, where various artistic expressions meet. Notably, the Indonesian pavilions draw attention with their remarkable batik art displays. These artisans have ingeniously merged traditional batik methods with Saudi motifs, crafting pieces that beautifully blend both cultures.

Creating batik is an ancient Indonesian art form recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage. This intricate process involves applying wax resist to fabric, followed by repeated dyeing and waxing to form detailed patterns. The designs often hold cultural and religious meanings, reflecting Indonesians' deep ties to their surroundings.

At Banan, the intricate patterns of batik are inspired by various Saudi elements such as northern Sadu, eastern Hasawi plaster, southern Al-Qatt Al-Asiri, Najdi door decorations, and western Rawashin. This fusion creates a harmonious blend of Saudi aesthetics within the traditional Indonesian art form.

The convergence of Indonesian and Saudi artistic traditions at Banan highlights art's ability to transcend cultural barriers. Dr. Dalia Alyahya, Handcrafts General Manager at the Heritage Commission, underscores the importance of these cultural exchanges. She notes that Indonesian batik at Banan is more than just an artistic display; it represents shared values and aspirations across cultures.

Dr. Alyahya stated, "Through art, we can bridge cultural divides and foster global harmony. Batik, with its rich history and enduring appeal, continues to inspire and connect people across the world."
