Indonesia And Al-Azhar Forge Alliance For Global Peace And Development
President Joko Widodo of Indonesia welcomed Prof. Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders, at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta. They discussed promoting dialogue, tolerance, and coexistence.
President Widodo highlighted the deep respect Indonesians have for Dr. Al-Tayeb's scientific and humanitarian contributions. He acknowledged Al-Azhar as a key reference for Indonesian Muslims and praised the Grand Imam's efforts in fostering dialogue, fraternity, and peace.

The President also lauded the Muslim Council of Elders for its global peace initiatives. He expressed joy over the council's new regional office in Indonesia, confident it would support Southeast Asian Muslims effectively.
Dr. Al-Tayeb appreciated Indonesia's significant role in promoting peace and tolerance under President Widodo's leadership. He commended Indonesia as a model of diversity, development, and coexistence.
The Grand Imam mentioned that the Muslim Council of Elders is planning an international initiative called "Alliance of Religions for Development and Peace" with Indonesia. This initiative aims to enhance religious leaders' roles in supporting development and peace efforts.
Global Initiatives by Al-Azhar
Dr. Al-Tayeb highlighted several key initiatives by Al-Azhar, including the "Al-Azhar Global Declaration on Citizenship" launched in Cairo and the "Document on Human Fraternity" signed in Abu Dhabi in 2019. He also mentioned the "Call of Conscience: Abu Dhabi Joint Statement for Climate" and the "Faith Pavilion at COP28," marking a historic inclusion at the Conference of the Parties.
President Widodo warmly welcomed this initiative, recognising its importance for Indonesia, Southeast Asia, and globally. He affirmed Indonesia's readiness to host and fully support it.
The meeting underscored both leaders' commitment to fostering global peace through dialogue and cooperation among religious communities.
