Emirati Students Pursuing Higher Education In China Increase To 64 In 2024
The UAE has increased the number of Emirati students studying in China through the Distinguished Student Scholarship (DSS) to 64 in 2024. This aligns with President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan's vision for expanding higher education. The initiative, guided by His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, reflects strong ties between the UAE and China, aiming to support education and develop national talent.
Ahmed Mohamed Al Hameeri, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Presidential Affairs and Vice Chairman of the Scholarship Office (SCO), praised the support from UAE leadership for overseas students. He acknowledged the SCO's efforts to increase student numbers in China. Al Hameeri noted that both nations share a strategic partnership, enhancing ties in various fields, including education.

The SCO announced an increase in Emirati students in China from five in 2023 to 70 by mid-September this year. These students are pursuing bachelor's and master's degrees at top Chinese universities. The SCO aims to expand this number to 300 in coming years, aligning with its strategy to offer quality educational opportunities that meet national goals and strengthen partnerships with friendly countries.
Chinese universities have warmly welcomed Emirati students, showcasing a commitment to cooperation in science and technology. Dr. Xiaopeng Li, Dean of College of International Education at East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST), highlighted the strong China-UAE educational ties during a reception for the students. Dr. Xuan Fuzhen, President of ECUST, also attended the event.
Dr. Xiaopeng Li expressed pleasure in partnering with the SCO and welcoming Emirati students, stating, "This is a wonderful opportunity for cultural and knowledge exchange," wishing them success on their educational journey. The scholarship recipients and their families expressed gratitude to UAE leadership for this opportunity and showed enthusiasm for studying in China.
In May, an SCO delegation visited 12 Chinese universities across Beijing, Xi’an, and Shanghai. They met senior officials and inspected student facilities such as accommodation, classrooms, labs, and sports areas. The delegation ensured student well-being and explored new academic programmes and cooperation opportunities with Chinese institutions.
Future Prospects
The delegation also met officials from the China Scholarship Council to discuss admissions procedures and summer programmes. Another SCO team accompanied students to facilitate their admission process before the academic year began. This initiative underscores the UAE's commitment to fostering educational excellence through international collaboration.
The scholarship programme not only enhances academic experiences but also allows students to learn Chinese language and culture. This immersion adds significant value to their education journey. The initiative reflects shared interests between both nations while contributing to developing skilled professionals equipped for future challenges.
