Inaugural Sharjah Festival Of African Literature To Feature Nobel Laureates And Celebrated Authors
The Sharjah Festival of African Literature (SFAL) will debut from January 24 to 27 at University City in Sharjah. Organised by the Sharjah Book Authority (SBA), it aims to enhance cultural exchange between Africa and the Arab world. The event will feature over 20 African authors, including Nobel laureates, celebrating African literary heritage and fostering dialogue among writers, intellectuals, artists, and audiences.
Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of SBA, highlighted the festival's role in bridging continents through literature. She stated: "The Sharjah Festival of African Literature stands as a testament to the profound capacity of literature to bridge continents and illuminate shared human truths. By celebrating the enduring legacy of African storytelling, we transcend cultural divides and honour the boundless creativity that defines our collective heritage."

The festival will host Tanzanian writer Abdulrazak Gurnah and Nigerian writer Wole Soyinka, both Nobel laureates in literature. They will join leading Emirati writers to discuss African literature's influence on global culture. This gathering aims to foster cultural ties between Africa and the Arab world while celebrating creative diversity.
Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Ameri, CEO of SBA, expressed commitment to expanding literary horizons under Sheikha Bodour's leadership. He remarked: "SFAL reflects our unwavering commitment...to opening new literary horizons and redefining the map of global cultural engagements by highlighting the literature of African nations." The festival honours African literature's treasures and influence while establishing a foundation for global cultural dialogue.
The event encourages exchanging expertise among writers, publishers, researchers, and audiences. It focuses on African literature pioneers and aesthetics, fostering critical studies on its historical and artistic implications. SFAL enhances knowledge about African literature while promoting a new model of cultural relations that celebrates Africa’s creative legacy.
Diverse Cultural Activities
Over four days, SFAL will offer panel discussions, children's workshops, musical concerts, art exhibitions, performances, and culinary experiences. These activities aim to deepen appreciation for African culture while enhancing communication between Emirati and African communities. The festival provides a platform for exploring diverse aspects of African culture through various engaging events.
