Inaugural ALA School Librarians Conference Commences In Sharjah To Enhance Reading Culture
The ALA School Librarians Conference commenced at Expo Centre Sharjah, highlighting the emirate's dedication to promoting reading and improving school libraries in the region. This two-day event, organised by the Sharjah Book Authority with several associations, brings together school librarians and educational experts from around the world.
Becky Calzada, President of the American Association of School Librarians, delivered a keynote speech. She emphasised that school libraries are crucial for fostering lifelong reading habits and empowering students. Calzada noted that global collaboration in literacy engagement is essential, stating that reading offers more than just information; it provides inspiration, confidence, and a sense of belonging.

Mansour Al Hassani, General Coordinator of Professional Conferences at Sharjah Book Authority, attended the opening alongside Michael Dowling from the ALA. Al Hassani mentioned that under Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi's guidance, the conference aims to equip school library professionals with global tools and experiences. The goal is to transform libraries into interactive learning spaces.
Dr Margaret K. Merga from the University of Notre Dame in Fremantle spoke about how reading for pleasure can enhance empathy, resilience, and literacy. She advocated for comprehensive school literacy policies and highlighted librarians' roles as role models and advocates for reading. Dr Merga shared insights from a 2024 global survey conducted in 63 countries.
The survey revealed ongoing challenges such as deprofessionalisation but confirmed the essential role of school libraries in nurturing future readers. The conference also featured educators and librarians from both the UAE and other countries who gathered to share their expertise and insights on advancing library systems.
The event underscores Sharjah's commitment to enhancing educational resources through collaboration with international library associations. By focusing on innovative practices and sharing knowledge globally, the conference aims to empower librarians to create inspiring environments for students.
