Importance Of Scientific Research And Biotechnology In Advancing Saudi Arabia's Healthcare Strategy

Dr. Majid Al Fayyadh, CEO of King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center, highlighted the significance of investing in scientific research and biotechnology as a cornerstone of Saudi Arabia's healthcare strategy. He stated that the hospital has been involved in medical research for over five decades and is now aiming to progress in biotechnological innovation through a national strategy focusing on infrastructure and human capital development.

During a panel discussion at the ninth Future Investment Initiative (FII9), Dr. Al Fayyadh emphasized the need to connect research with commercial applications to create a sustainable biotechnology ecosystem. He noted that human capital is the biggest challenge in this development process. The hospital's success in producing the first locally manufactured CAR-T cell therapy and treating a patient successfully was highlighted as an example of progress.

Biotechnology's Role in Saudi Healthcare Strategy

Dr. Noubar Afeyan from Moderna participated in the same session, discussing major challenges facing the biotechnology sector, such as regulatory procedures and market entry costs. He praised international models in health and biotechnology, stressing the importance of using natural resources to drive progress and innovation. Dr. Afeyan also mentioned that artificial intelligence and biotechnology are now essential partners in advancing healthcare technologies.

The Saudi Food and Drug Authority has significantly improved its procedures' speed and quality, now ranking among the world's best. Clinical trials can be approved within just 60 days, according to Dr. Al Fayyadh. This transformation is crucial for fostering an effective biotechnology ecosystem in Saudi Arabia.

Dr. Al Fayyadh pointed out that attracting and training specialized professionals is vital for future success in biotechnology. The development of human capital remains a critical factor for advancing this sector further. He stressed that this aspect will be essential for achieving success in upcoming phases.

Dr. Afeyan emphasized that more innovation and effort are needed globally to find solutions supporting advancements in biotechnology for humanity's benefit.
