Dr. Amna Al Dahak Highlights 'Plant The Emirates' Programme For Sustainable Food Security In UAE

Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, the UAE's Minister of Climate Change and Environment, recently visited Abdulrahman Al Shamsi's farm in Al Ain. This visit aimed to explore the innovative agricultural techniques and technologies being used at the farm. The farm is a prime example of modern agriculture in the UAE, producing crops year-round.

The visit aligns with the 'Plant the Emirates' programme, which aims to boost agricultural development in the UAE. This initiative supports sustainable food security, fosters private sector partnerships, and expands green spaces nationwide. The programme also ensures these green spaces are sustainable over time.

Promoting Sustainable Food Security in UAE

Dr. Al Dahak praised the farm for its role as a model for national agriculture. She was impressed by its production capacity of strategic crops, which supports the UAE's National Food Security Strategy 2051. "We encourage local farmers to expand their agricultural activities," she stated, emphasising support for boosting production and distribution across UAE markets.

She highlighted the community's essential role as partners in promoting agriculture and food production from home. The 'Plant the Emirates' programme will soon launch events and initiatives to engage society in growing fruits and vegetables at home for personal use.

The farm spans over 160,000 square metres and has significant potential for agricultural production and livestock development. It produces more than 150 tonnes of crops annually, including dates, pomegranates, courgettes, watermelons, lemons, cabbage, and mangoes.

The farm uses aquaculture extensively to boost crop yields by three times while conserving 90% of water resources. This method involves using fish waste as fertiliser and plastic coverings on soil to retain moisture.

Future Plans for Agricultural Development

Dr. Al Dahak also mentioned the upcoming National Agriculture Centre, set to be unveiled next year. This centre will offer grants and funding for innovative agricultural projects and modern farming technology. Its goals include increasing productive farms, upgrading organic farms, reducing agricultural waste, among others.

The media's role in promoting national farms and supporting sustainable food security efforts was also acknowledged by Dr. Al Dahak. She stressed how important it is to highlight initiatives like 'Plant the Emirates' that strengthen agricultural practices for a secure food future.

The farm is self-sufficient; it grows its own feed for fish and livestock while using fish pool water to irrigate crops. This integrated system exemplifies efficient resource management in agriculture.

Dr. Al Dahak concluded her visit by recognising the farm's contribution to national agriculture goals and encouraging further expansion of such practices across the country.
