AI In Publishing Explored At 33rd Abu Dhabi International Book Fair
During the 33rd edition of the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair, a significant panel discussion titled "Artificial Intelligence in International Publishing" took place at Thebes Stage. This discussion brought together Fareed Zahran, President of the Egyptian Publishers Association, and Jose Borghino, Secretary-General of the International Publishers Association (IPA), to delve into the transformative role of artificial intelligence (AI) in the spheres of writing, printing, and publishing. Moderated by Ahmed Rashad, the session illuminated both the benefits and challenges AI introduces to the publishing world.
Jose Borghino provided a historical overview, tracing the human fascination with artificial forms of intelligence back to 1956 when the term 'artificial intelligence' was first coined. He referenced early examples of AI conceptualization, including the 11th-century Arab scholar Ismail al-Jazari and the fictional character Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. These instances underscored humanity's long-standing intrigue with creating intelligence. Borghino further explained how modern AI algorithms are now adept at predicting sentences and have significantly improved the translation of Arabic texts into other languages. This advancement has facilitated the integration of more Arabic works into global literature.

Fareed Zahran highlighted the evolution of publishing since the advent of computers. He noted that what once required extensive time and effort from writers can now be accomplished more efficiently thanks to technological advancements. AI has revolutionized research, access to information, book design, and text formatting. Despite these advancements, Zahran emphasized that AI serves as a tool to aid authors rather than replace them. He pointed out that while computers excel at data collection and storage, they cannot replicate the creative essence of human authors. According to Zahran, AI might be able to provide up to 90% of information for academic books but falls short in capturing the essence of novels, managing only about 70%.
AI's Impact on Creativity and Literature
The discussion underscored that innovation, creativity, and literature are inherently human endeavors reflecting personal experiences. While AI has made significant strides in various aspects of publishing, it ultimately enhances rather than replaces human effort. The panelists concurred that AI's role in publishing is that of an enabler, facilitating various processes but leaving final creative control in the hands of authors.
The insights shared during this panel discussion at the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair shed light on the complex interplay between artificial intelligence and human creativity in publishing. As AI continues to evolve, its influence on literature and publishing will undoubtedly grow, but it remains clear that the heart and soul of storytelling reside within human experience.
