IMF Recognises Saudi Arabia’s Leadership In Data Centres And Commends Personal Data Protection Law
Saudi Arabia leads the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) in the number of data centres, as confirmed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). This achievement highlights the Kingdom's strides in digital infrastructure development. The Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) spearheads this progress, focusing on data and artificial intelligence growth.
The IMF's study, "Digital Transformation in the Gulf Cooperation Council Economies," praises Saudi Arabia for establishing SDAIA as an independent authority in 2019. The launch of the National Strategy for Data and AI is a significant milestone. These efforts underscore the Kingdom's commitment to advancing its digital landscape.

Saudi Arabia has also introduced the Personal Data Protection Law, which aims to ensure robust data governance and privacy. This law fosters a regulatory environment that adapts to technological advancements while protecting individual and institutional rights according to global standards.
SDAIA is actively developing sustainable data centres that align with international standards. These facilities are certified by the Uptime Institute, known for their energy efficiency and low power usage effectiveness (PUE) ratings. Such initiatives reflect Saudi Arabia's dedication to maintaining high operational standards.
The Kingdom has successfully launched several digital platforms, significantly impacting key sectors. These platforms have improved quality of life by enhancing service reliability and accessibility. They also contribute to achieving the broader goals outlined in Saudi Vision 2030.
Commitment to Technological Advancements
The IMF acknowledges Saudi Arabia's efforts in creating a dynamic regulatory framework through its Personal Data Protection Law. This framework ensures that technological developments are met with appropriate governance measures, safeguarding rights at both individual and institutional levels.
Saudi Arabia's focus on digital transformation is evident through its strategic initiatives led by SDAIA. By prioritising sustainable development and energy efficiency, the Kingdom sets a benchmark for other GCC countries in digital infrastructure advancement.
Saudi Arabia continues to make significant progress in digital transformation within the GCC region. Its commitment to developing robust digital infrastructure, guided by SDAIA, positions it as a leader in data centre development and technological innovation.
