ICRP Acknowledges UAE's Leadership In Global Radiological Protection Standards
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is recognised for its leadership in radiation protection, according to Christopher Clement, CEO of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP). He praised the UAE's integrated framework as a model for implementing top radiological safety standards. His comments were made during the 8th International Symposium on the System of Radiological Protection in Abu Dhabi.
The UAE's progress in radiation safety policies is notable, especially with the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant. This plant marks a strategic achievement in peaceful nuclear energy. The country's advanced medical infrastructure further highlights its dedication to safety and environmental protection. Clement emphasised these points while discussing the UAE's advancements.

Clement noted that the ICRP has maintained a strong partnership with the UAE for over ten years. This collaboration involves working with the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) and institutions like Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi. These partnerships provide opportunities to develop and share best practices in radiological protection globally.
The symposium, organised by FANR and ICRP, attracted over 500 experts from 53 countries. It stands as one of the largest international events focused on radiological protection. This gathering underscores the UAE's growing role as a hub for scientific cooperation and knowledge exchange in this critical area.
During the conference, ICRP conducted specialised scientific sessions aimed at updating global radiological protection methodologies. These sessions focus on enhancing human and environmental safety worldwide. Clement stated that these efforts would bolster comprehensive safety practices across the UAE, Gulf region, and beyond.
Clement described the UAE’s approach as an inspiring example for modern nations to adopt high-level safety practices. Hosting this global conference in Abu Dhabi highlights the country's increasing international prominence in scientific collaboration.
The outcomes of these sessions are expected to strengthen safety practices not only within the UAE but also across the Gulf region and globally. This reflects a commitment to advancing radiological protection standards worldwide.
The symposium concludes tomorrow, marking another step forward in international cooperation on radiological protection. The event serves as a platform for sharing knowledge and fostering partnerships among scientists, experts, and policymakers dedicated to this vital field.
