ICJ Rejects Sudanese Armed Forces Lawsuit Against UAE, Calls For Peace In Sudan

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has dismissed a lawsuit filed by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) against the UAE. This decision is seen by international media as a strong rejection of an attempt to shift blame for the ongoing conflict in Sudan. Analysts have emphasised that the SAF should focus on ending the war and collaborating with global partners to restore peace in Sudan.

Various media outlets have highlighted the severe humanitarian impact of the civil war in Sudan, describing it as one of the worst crises globally. The Guardian reported that despite international peace efforts, the conflict, ongoing since April 2023, has led to a dire humanitarian situation. CNN noted that the ICJ dismissed Sudan’s case, which accused the UAE of violating the Genocide Convention.

ICJ Dismisses SAF Lawsuit Against UAE

CNN quoted Reem Ketait, Deputy Assistant Minister of Political Affairs in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stating, "This decision is a clear and decisive affirmation of the fact that this case was utterly baseless." She added that today's ruling represents a firm rejection of SAF's attempt to misuse the court for misinformation and distraction from its own responsibilities.

The Associated Press (AP) reported on Sudan's descent into bloody conflict in mid-April 2023. It mentioned that judges found the ICJ lacked authority to proceed with Sudan's case against the UAE. The Guardian also quoted Reem Ketait, who said, "The facts speak for themselves: the UAE bears no responsibility for the conflict in Sudan."

Russia Today reported that the UAE government welcomed this decision as a "categorical rejection of Sudan’s false claim." It quoted Ketait saying, "The decision clearly and unequivocally confirms that the case is without merit… [It] represents a decisive rejection of SAF’s attempt to exploit the court." Al-Arab newspaper described this dismissal as a political victory for UAE against SAF's attempts to deflect attention from its role in prolonging war.

Several journalists and political observers criticised General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan’s team for filing this legal action. They argued it showed a lack of understanding of diplomatic frameworks and was based on weak evidence aimed at diverting attention from military failures. Observers noted that this group does not represent Sudan or its people's will.

Criticism and Observations

Observers stated that SAF should prioritise ending conflict and work with allies to support stability in Sudan. They highlighted UAE’s diplomatic efforts as evidence of its constructive role in aiding Sudanese people. Meanwhile, they criticised those behind lawsuit for pursuing political gains at expense of suffering citizens.

Al-Arab also quoted observers who viewed SAF's legal complaint as a tactic to delay accountability after failing to achieve stability post-coup against democratic transition. This move triggered civil war in April 2023. Analysts stressed need for SAF to focus on peace rather than legal battles.

The ICJ's dismissal underscores international consensus on focusing efforts towards peace rather than blame games. The decision highlights importance of collaboration among nations to address humanitarian crises effectively while holding responsible parties accountable for their actions.
