ICCROM Launches READY Project To Enhance Protection Of Cultural Heritage From Extreme Risks
The International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM) has launched a call for participation in the first track of the READY project. This initiative, part of the First Aid and Resilience for Cultural Heritage in Times of Crisis programme (FAR), includes an international training course from May 2025 to February 2026. The course is titled "Safeguarding Heritage Collections, Living Traditions, and Practices in the Face of Disasters, Extreme Weather Events, and Complex Emergencies."
In collaboration with the European Commission's Directorate-General for Education, Youth, Sport and Culture (DG EAC), this EU-funded project aims to empower professionals to protect at-risk heritage. It seeks to enhance capabilities to safeguard heritage from extreme threats like climate change-induced disasters and armed conflicts globally. The initiative explores practical solutions to protect heritage while leveraging its potential to mitigate disaster impacts, adapt to climate changes, and foster peace.

The READY initiative offers a structured training course designed to equip participants with essential skills for heritage protection. The course spans four phases over six months, combining online and in-person learning. It begins with a four-week online orientation from late May to late June 2025. Following this, a 15-day in-person training on movable and intangible cultural heritage will take place in Riga, Latvia, starting after July 15, 2025.
Participants will then engage in follow-up field projects from August 2025 to February 2026. During this phase, they will propose projects aimed at enhancing heritage management capacities within their home countries. The final phase involves an international online meeting where project outcomes will be shared.
The READY1 initiative invites applications from diverse heritage protection professionals. Eligible candidates include cultural heritage experts working in museums, libraries, archives, community leaders preserving living traditions, as well as professionals in disaster management, civil protection, climate adaptation, and emergency response fields.
Applicants must be citizens of countries participating in the Creative Europe programme. Interested individuals should submit their applications through the online form by April 20, 2025. This initiative represents a significant step forward in enhancing the skills of heritage professionals across Europe.
Impact on Heritage Professionals
By participating in the READY program, heritage professionals gain tools necessary for protecting cultural assets while advocating for sustainable practices. This commitment ensures future generations can appreciate Europe's rich history and diverse cultural legacy. The program not only equips participants with practical skills but also positions them as advocates for sustainable heritage practices.
The READY initiative is pivotal in advancing the capabilities of heritage professionals throughout Europe. It underscores the importance of safeguarding cultural heritage against increasing risks while promoting resilience and sustainability within communities.
