ICCROM's 5th Arab Forum In Sharjah Concludes With Key Recommendations For Empowering Women And Youth In Heritage Protection

The 5th Arab Forum for Cultural Heritage recently concluded in Sharjah, focusing on enhancing cultural heritage protection across the Arab region. Organised by ICCROM's Regional Centre in Sharjah, the event gathered cultural officials, experts, and practitioners. Over three days, they shared knowledge, showcased projects, and planned future collaborations.

Participants adopted recommendations to empower youth and women in heritage protection. They stressed integrating heritage topics into all educational levels and developing vocational training for youth and women in conservation and cultural entrepreneurship. These efforts aim to strengthen public engagement with heritage.

Empowering Women and Youth in Heritage

The recommendations highlighted non-formal education's role in promoting community awareness of heritage. Museums and libraries were noted as key players in this effort. Initiatives targeting children and youth were encouraged to foster intergenerational connections through cultural values.

Ensuring equal opportunities for women and youth in leadership roles was emphasised. The recommendations called for documenting women's contributions to heritage preservation and integrating marginalised groups into heritage policies. Heritage was positioned as a tool for peacebuilding and social cohesion.

The Forum recommended supporting youth- and women-led initiatives with seed grants. Strengthening skills in marketing and cultural innovation was advised to transform heritage into a sustainable economic resource. Storytelling and creativity were encouraged in promotion strategies.

Media's role in advocating for heritage issues was underscored. Greater participation of youth and women in national and international events was urged to highlight identity and belonging. The use of social platforms was also encouraged for advocacy purposes.

Documentation and Digital Innovation

Participants urged establishing unified regional archives and digital repositories. They advocated for ethical use of modern technologies like AI in documentation processes. Regular reports on the state of heritage were recommended alongside documenting emerging cultural initiatives.

The need to bridge tech-savvy youth expertise with that of heritage professionals was stressed to foster innovation. Developing practical digital tools was seen as essential for advancing heritage preservation efforts.

Future Policies and Partnerships

The recommendations called for inclusive cultural policies that align with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Sustainable financing mechanisms tailored to the Arab region were suggested, especially during conflicts or crises.

Strengthening Arab cooperation through expertise exchange was emphasised. Expanding partnerships with international organisations and the private sector was seen as crucial for long-term continuity of community initiatives.

Future Forums

For future forums, participants proposed involving universities more deeply. Creating a dedicated digital archive alongside youth-oriented content like podcasts was suggested. Deeper problem-solving sessions were recommended.

Diverse sectors beyond the heritage field, including private investors, should be invited to support financially. Launching a youth award and financially-supported women-led initiatives were proposed to enhance sustainability.

The Forum's commitment is evident in its focus on consolidating the role of heritage now and in the future, ensuring its relevance across generations.
