Ibex Protected Area Achieves Historic Recognition As First Saudi Site On IUCN Green List

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has recognised the Ibex Protected Area in Saudi Arabia by adding it to the IUCN Green List. Managed by the National Center for Wildlife (NCW), this site is the first in Saudi Arabia to meet all necessary criteria for inclusion. This prestigious list features only 77 sites globally out of over 300,000 protected areas, highlighting its exceptional management and conservation standards.

Inclusion in the IUCN Green List signifies that the Ibex Protected Area has achieved high benchmarks in conservation. The area has successfully safeguarded natural resources, enhanced biodiversity, and improved habitats over time. This global verification system honours sites demonstrating effective management, fair governance, and positive outcomes for both nature and local communities.

Ibex Protected Area Joins IUCN Green List

Dr. Mohammed Qurban, CEO of NCW, stated: "The inclusion of the Ibex Protected Area in the IUCN Green List affirms our commitment to conserving habitats and achieving the 30x30 goal of protecting 30% of Saudi Arabia’s land and marine areas by 2030." He emphasised NCW's collaboration with wildlife partners to register all national protected areas on this significant list as part of Vision 2030.

Qurban further noted that this achievement demonstrates NCW's alignment with international conservation standards. He said: "This accomplishment shows that NCW efforts are up to international conservation standards and is testimony to our dedication to preserving Saudi Arabia’s rich biodiversity. It supports the sustainable management of natural resources, ensuring that our conservation efforts benefit current and future generations."

The Ibex Protected Area is located in Riyadh region and was established in 1988 following local community requests. It encompasses a vast plateau within the Tuwaiq mountain range, featuring valleys, streams, and sandy regions. Its ecological richness makes it a notable natural site both regionally and globally.

This protected area serves as a critical habitat for mountain ibex populations that have thrived there for millennia. It exemplifies habitat integrity across central Saudi Arabia's Tuwaiq mountains. The area supports diverse plant species like acacia, samur, and sidr trees alongside various shrubs, grasses, and herbs.

Global Recognition and Future Prospects

The Ibex Protected Area's inclusion on the Green List enhances its global reputation while reinforcing Saudi Arabia's commitment to sustainable conservation practices. This recognition aligns with Vision 2030 objectives by promoting environmentally significant sites worldwide.

The area provides habitat for numerous species including Arabian gazelle, rock hyrax, foxes, rodents, birds, and reptiles. Its thriving biodiversity underscores its importance as a model for effective conservation efforts benefiting both present and future generations.
