Humanity Faces A Pivotal Moment After 25 Years Of Transformations, Says Al Gergawi
Mohammad Abdullah Al Gergawi, Minister of Cabinet Affairs and Chairman of the World Governments Summit (WGS), highlighted that humanity stands at a crucial juncture. Over the past 25 years, significant technological, economic, and social changes have occurred. Despite challenges, these years have also seen remarkable progress. Al Gergawi emphasised that future advancements will surpass those of the past, shaped by today's decisions.
Reflecting on history's lessons, Al Gergawi stated that the future will differ greatly from the past. Governments must prepare for transformative economic and technological shifts. He stressed that understanding history is vital to shaping the future. "Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat its mistakes," he warned.

The last quarter-century has seen profound transformations in technology and economics. The global population has grown to 8.2 billion, while the economy expanded from $34 trillion to $115 trillion by 2024. International trade increased nearly fivefold from $7 trillion to $33 trillion in 2024.
Traditional industries like oil and manufacturing have given way to tech corporations and digital platforms. China and India emerged as major economic forces, balancing declines in some industrialised nations. In 2000, optimism surrounded globalisation; however, populism led countries towards inward-looking policies.
In 2000, less than 7% of people used the internet; today, over 60% do. Cryptocurrencies grew from no market value to over $3 trillion. Technological warfare evolved from science fiction to reality with drones and AI now used in conflicts.
Nuclear warfare was once feared most; now cyber and biological threats are also concerns. Al Gergawi asked what might have been different if humanity's decisions had varied over these years.
Challenges in Peace and Economic Growth
Al Gergawi presented four realities shaped by past choices. Over two million lives were lost in conflicts, with around 120 million displaced as refugees. Only 4% of conflicts ended in peace agreements. He questioned if prioritising peace could have altered outcomes.
Economic growth hasn't always improved well-being; depression affects 280 million people globally, costing $1 trillion annually. Al Gergawi asked if focusing on "quality" rather than "quantity" of growth could have made a difference.
Trust in Government and Humanitarian Efforts
Trust in governments declined between 2000 and 2025; only 52% express confidence in leaders according to a "Trust in Government" indicator. Al Gergawi questioned if fostering trust should have been a priority.
Despite progress, 630 million people remain impoverished. Eradicating hunger and improving education would need about $800 billion yearly. The UAE allocates 1.5% of its GDP for humanitarian aid, highlighting human-driven motivations' importance.
The Future: Population Growth and Technological Advancements
Looking ahead, Al Gergawi shared projections for the next 25 years: By 2050, the global population will reach 10 billion with significant growth in Africa and Asia. Over 20% will be over age 60, requiring advanced healthcare systems.
More than 20 billion robots will serve humans, reshaping societies and labour markets. Space will become integral to life with its economy reaching $4 trillion; technology will enhance human capabilities significantly.
The Role of Artificial Intelligence
"We are transitioning into a new phase," noted Al Gergawi about AI's potential impact on humanity's evolution over millennia where humans were sole thinkers capable of creation or command-giving abilities but now face competition from emerging technologies potentially surpassing them significantly."
