Saudi Arabia's Human Resources Ministry Enhances Worker Rights And Labor Standards Through New Policies

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is committed to safeguarding human rights for both its citizens and residents. The Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development plays a pivotal role in this mission by forming partnerships locally and internationally. These collaborations aim to adopt global best practices to protect human rights and workers' rights within the labour market.

At the start of 2025, Saudi Arabia's Cabinet approved a groundbreaking policy to eliminate forced labour, marking a first in the Gulf and Arab regions. This policy aims to create a secure and appealing labour market by eradicating all forms of forced labour. It ensures worker protection through strict regulations and promotes decent working conditions for everyone.

Enhancing Worker Rights in Saudi Arabia

The National Policy to Encourage Equal Opportunities and Equal Treatment in Employment aligns with Islamic law while adhering to international treaties. It focuses on eliminating discrimination in employment, ensuring equal opportunities for all. This initiative underscores the Kingdom's commitment to promoting equality and respecting human rights.

In efforts to enhance workplace safety, the ministry has implemented measures such as banning work under direct sunlight. This year, compliance among businesses reached 94%, with inspection teams conducting over 29,000 field visits. These visits ensure adherence to regulations, with legal penalties imposed on non-compliant establishments.

The ministry also prioritises social care by focusing on the rights of persons with disabilities and the elderly. Regulations are designed to protect these groups, ensuring they receive equal access to services that promote their well-being and quality of life. The goal is to guarantee their rights are upheld in a dignified manner.

Central to the new policy is a victim-centred approach that guides support services for those affected by forced labour. The policy also emphasises non-discrimination, equality promotion, respect for human rights, and combating discrimination across various sectors.

The National Council for Occupational Safety and Health represents the ministry's efforts in safeguarding worker safety. Through various initiatives, it aims to ensure safe working environments across the Kingdom, reflecting its dedication to protecting workers' health.

Saudi Arabia's commitment extends beyond national borders as it aligns with international conventions on human rights protection. By fostering cooperation among relevant authorities, the Kingdom strives to eradicate forced labour while enhancing working conditions for all individuals involved.
