Historic Dalma Race Festival Begins: A Celebration Of UAE's Seafaring Legacy
The seventh edition of the Historic Dalma Race Festival, a much-anticipated event in the UAE's cultural calendar, is set to kick off tomorrow, 26th April, and will continue until 5th May on Dalma Island, located in Abu Dhabi's Al Dhafra region. This festival, organized by the Abu Dhabi Heritage Authority and the Abu Dhabi Marine Sports Club, is a celebration of the UAE's rich maritime heritage and aims to engage the community with a variety of activities that highlight the nation's culture and environmental conservation efforts.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, President of the UAE Marine Sports Federation and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Abu Dhabi Marine Sports Club, praised the festival for its role in promoting UAE's culture and heritage. He emphasized its commitment to sustainability and environmental preservation, alongside encouraging the practice of traditional sports. The Historic Dalma 60-foot dhow race, a key feature of the festival, is celebrated for enhancing Dalma Island's historical significance and offering sailors a chance to compete in a prestigious event.
Major General Staff Pilot Faris Khalaf Al Mazrouei, Commander-in-Chief of Abu Dhabi Police and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Heritage Authority, remarked on the festival's importance in revitalizing UAE’s maritime heritage and providing a platform for showcasing sea heritage crafts. Since its inception in 2017, the festival has become a cornerstone event for celebrating sea heritage annually.
The festival boasts an array of events including traditional and modern marine activities, cultural exhibitions, and sports competitions. With prizes worth over AED32 million, it offers participants not only a competitive edge but also a chance to delve into recreational and educational activities. The highlight of the festival is undoubtedly the 60-foot sailing dhows race, covering 68 nautical miles or 125 kilometres across eight islands before concluding at Al-Mugheirah Corniche beach in Al Dhafra.
Prizes for the race are substantial, with the first-place winner receiving AED1.3 million along with a car. The second-place winner gets one million dirhams and a car, while the third-place winner takes home AED800,000 and a car. Prizes extend up to the 120th place, ensuring wide participation.
In addition to sporting events, the festival features a traditional souk where local families can display their products ranging from food to handicrafts. This market not only serves as an economic boost for Dalma Island but also offers visitors a glimpse into local culture through various entertainment and heritage shows performed by Abu Dhabi folklore troupes.
The Historic Dalma Race Festival stands as a testament to the UAE's dedication to preserving its maritime heritage and promoting national identity through marine activities. It also highlights Dalma Island as an attractive tourist destination within the UAE. The festival is open to visitors daily from 16:00 to 22:00, inviting all to experience the vibrant culture and traditions of the Emirati community.
