UN Forum To Review Sustainable Development Goals Opens In New York
The High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) commenced on Monday in New York. This two-week event serves as the primary United Nations platform for reviewing and following up on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) globally. It represents the pinnacle of the framework established by the 2030 Agenda and General Assembly resolution 70/299.
During her address at the forum's opening session, UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed emphasised, "I believe this is also a moment of great opportunity to turn things around. Last year's SDG Summit generated new momentum and a commitment to accelerate the implementation of the 2030 Agenda." She urged for transformative actions and bold policies to ensure a peaceful, prosperous, and sustainable future.

Mohammed highlighted several pressing issues, including poverty, food insecurity, humanitarian crises, displacement due to conflicts, discrimination against women and girls, and the escalating impacts of climate change. She noted that current efforts in action and financing for mitigation, adaptation, and addressing loss and damage are insufficient.
President of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), Paula Narváez, also spoke at the forum. She underscored the challenges faced by developing nations, especially those affected by conflicts. Narváez stressed that peace and stability are crucial for progress. She pointed out that local and regional actions are part of the agenda, along with insights from regional forums and key intergovernmental discussions.
Narváez emphasised inclusive participation, particularly involving youth and marginalised groups. She highlighted that gender perspective is essential for achieving sustainable development. The forum will feature general debates linking last year's SDG Summit with this September's Summit of the Future.
Voluntary National Reviews
The forum will see 37 countries presenting their Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs). These reviews will provide insights into their experiences with implementing the 2030 Agenda and its SDGs. The 2024 HLPF will build on these experiences while hearing from other countries about best practices and lessons learned.
Narváez added that this space would allow for presenting transformative actions related to monitoring the SDGs Summit in 2023. It will also be an opportunity to share priorities and expectations for the upcoming summit.
The HLPF aims to bridge discussions from last year's SDG Summit to future global summits. By doing so, it seeks to maintain momentum in achieving sustainable development goals worldwide.
The forum's focus on inclusive participation ensures that diverse voices contribute to shaping policies for a sustainable future. This approach recognises that achieving sustainable development requires collective effort across all sectors of society.
The ongoing discussions at HLPF highlight both challenges and opportunities in implementing sustainable development goals globally. Participants aim to identify effective strategies for overcoming obstacles while accelerating progress towards a more sustainable world.
This year's forum underscores the importance of collaborative efforts among nations to address global challenges effectively. By sharing experiences and best practices, countries can learn from each other and enhance their approaches to sustainable development.
