Hewi Dubai Initiative Launched To Revitalise Traditional Emirati Neighbourhoods And Community Spaces
H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai, has introduced the Hewi Dubai initiative. This project aims to revitalise public spaces in Dubai by drawing inspiration from traditional Emirati neighbourhoods. The goal is to create community areas that enhance social connections and encourage an active lifestyle.
H.H. Sheikh Hamdan emphasised the importance of community bonds, stating: "Community bonds are among the core values Emirati families are raised on. We must pass on these values to future generations and design public spaces that bring neighbours together, where families can gather, elders can meet, and children can create endearing memories in a safe and welcoming environment."

The Hewi Dubai initiative envisions these new spaces as vibrant extensions of cultural identity. They aim to redefine public spaces by reflecting Emirati values and future aspirations. H.H. Sheikh Hamdan noted that these areas will not be conventional but will serve as dynamic representations of the city's cultural heritage.
A key component of this initiative is Hewi Nad Al Sheba 4, developed by the Dubai Future Foundation (DFF) in collaboration with Dubai Municipality. This model for public space creation involves co-designing with residents, using comprehensive data, and grounding in cultural context.
The site for Hewi Nad Al Sheba 4 was chosen for its pedestrian-friendly atmosphere and inherent community feel. It is situated between a mosque and a residential area in Nad Al Sheba 4. The park represents a shift from generic spaces to neighbourhood parks that focus on comfort and community life.
Each feature of the park has been carefully designed to meet the needs and values of the local community. A shaded area near the mosque, called Al Decha, provides a peaceful spot for elders to gather and share stories over Arabic coffee or tea.
Spaces for Community Engagement
Al Saaha is another feature of the park, offering a flexible indoor-outdoor space for community events, workshops, and celebrations. This area encourages residents to take ownership by hosting activities that reflect their lives and values.
For families, Al Yalsa offers a comfortable seating area overlooking a children's play zone. It serves as an ideal spot for relaxation, supervising children, or informal meetings.
Encouraging Exploration and Bonding
The park includes meandering paths and nature-based play areas designed to promote exploration and movement. These features encourage intergenerational bonding, making the park feel both natural and familiar to visitors.
This initiative marks a significant step towards creating public spaces that foster social connections while honouring cultural traditions. By focusing on human-centric design principles, it aims to enhance community life in Dubai.
