Heritage Commission Adds 184 New Cultural And Archaeological Sites In Al-Baha Region

The Heritage Commission has recently included 184 additional cultural, archaeological, and architectural sites from the Al-Baha Region into the National Antiquities Register. This brings the total number of listed sites in the region to 313. The initiative is part of a broader effort to preserve these sites and emphasise their historical and cultural importance through a modern digital register.

The Director of the Heritage Commission branch in Al-Baha, Abdulrahman Al-Ghamdi, highlighted that registering and documenting these sites aims to protect Saudi Arabia's rich historical and cultural heritage. He mentioned that management, conservation, and protection plans are being developed to ensure these sites' sustainability. This aligns with a vision to enhance Saudi Arabia's status as a global hub for heritage and culture.

184 New Cultural Sites Registered in Al-Baha

Al-Baha boasts a significant legacy of traditional architecture. Historic houses, mosques, castles, and fortresses in the region are constructed using local materials like stone, wood, and sand for roofs and columns. These structures represent a deep-rooted heritage of customs, arts, and traditions that are integral to national identity and cultural diversity.

The commission's efforts also focus on documenting and digitising heritage sites across Saudi Arabia. This modern digital register supports the preservation of the Kingdom’s cultural legacy. By doing so, it aims to safeguard these sites for future generations while promoting them as valuable sources of economic growth.

Heritage villages in Al-Baha have become popular tourist destinations for both domestic and international visitors. Tourists are drawn to explore the ancient civilizations shaped by the people of Al-Baha. These sites not only offer insights into history but also contribute significantly to economic development through tourism.

Abdulrahman Al-Ghamdi stated: "The registration and documentation of heritage and archaeological sites seek to safeguard the Kingdom’s rich historical and cultural heritage." His statement underscores the importance of preserving these sites as part of Saudi Arabia's broader cultural preservation strategy.

Overall, this initiative by the Heritage Commission reflects a commitment to preserving Saudi Arabia’s cultural treasures while promoting them as key attractions for tourists worldwide. The comprehensive vision aims to position Saudi Arabia as a leading destination for those interested in heritage and culture.
