Heritage Commission Completes Third Season Of AlSirrain Site Excavation In Makkah Region

The Heritage Commission has concluded its third season of archaeological digs at AlSirrain in Al-Lith, Makkah Region. This effort was in partnership with China's National Cultural Heritage Administration. The collaboration is part of an agreement to boost cooperation and share expertise in archaeology. It aligns with the Saudi-Chinese Cultural Year 2025, aiming to strengthen cultural ties between the two nations.

Excavations have uncovered a variety of artefacts, including ceramic and stone vessels, decorative tools, and a gold dinar from the mid-2nd Hijri century. Additionally, Chinese ceramics and gravestones with intricate patterns were found. These discoveries highlight the site's historical significance as a key point on the Maritime Silk Road.

The project seeks to deepen understanding of AlSirrain's historical context by examining its residential areas. Researchers aim to learn about social life through construction patterns and urban planning analysis. The study also explores how the site connected with other urban centres during its peak periods.

Significant architectural features were documented during the survey, including city walls, towers, and gates. These findings underscore AlSirrain's role as a major port city until the end of the 3rd Hijri century. It became a commercial hub in the early 4th Hijri century, thriving in the 5th and 6th Hijri centuries.

The collaboration reflects Saudi Arabia and China's dedication to advancing scientific research and preserving heritage. By documenting this rich human legacy, both countries aim to highlight their shared history along the Silk Road. "This project reaffirms the commissions’ efforts in preserving heritage through archaeological and research projects across the Kingdom and enhancing global cooperation," stated a release.

AlSirrain remains one of the largest archaeological sites on the Red Sea coast today. Its port played a crucial role in economic activities during its peak years. The ongoing excavations continue to reveal insights into its past significance as a bustling trade centre.

This initiative is part of broader efforts to document architectural phenomena at AlSirrain. Large sections of city walls were discovered along with several towers and gates. Such findings provide valuable insights into historical construction techniques and urban development patterns.
