Heritage Commission Completes Third Archaeological Excavation Season At Al-Ma'mala Site In Al-Baha Region

The Heritage Commission has wrapped up the third season of archaeological digs at Al-Ma'mala in Al-Baha. This project seeks to reveal the historical importance of sites throughout Saudi Arabia. Recent excavations have uncovered significant findings, including well-preserved stone walls made from carefully cut granite blocks, some reinforced with mud bricks. These discoveries highlight the advanced construction techniques used in ancient times.

Al-Ma'mala is situated 13 kilometers east of Al-Aqiq Governorate and 45 kilometers from Al-Baha's capital. Its proximity to the ancient Elephant Road underscores its historical and commercial significance. This road was a crucial trade route for caravans from southern Arabia before Islam and later became a major pilgrimage path during Islamic eras, boosting local prosperity.

Archaeologists identified two distinct architectural units at the site, offering insights into ancient lifestyles. These structures had well-defined spaces, indicating varied uses and reflecting sophisticated architectural practices of that era. The walls measured between 50 to 120 centimeters in height and 50 to 80 centimeters in width, showcasing the engineering skills of that time.

The excavation also revealed a diverse array of artifacts, including 230 pottery pieces with intricate geometric designs, 48 stone pieces, 26 colored glass fragments, 35 metal tools, and 17 stone tools. These findings suggest vibrant commercial and industrial activities at the site.

The Heritage Commission is dedicated to extensive archaeological surveys across Saudi Arabia. By using advanced geographical surveying and field excavation methods, they aim to discover and document new antiquities. This effort will illuminate the Kingdom's rich history and cultural heritage.

The commission's work at Al-Ma'mala not only highlights historical architecture but also provides valuable insights into past societies' lifestyles and commerce. The site's strategic location along a historic trade route further emphasizes its importance throughout different eras.
