Heritage Commission Completes Third Archaeological Excavation Season At Al-Ma'mala Site In Al-Baha Region

The Heritage Commission has wrapped up the third season of archaeological digs at Al-Ma'mala in the Al-Baha region. This project aims to explore and understand the historical significance of archaeological sites throughout Saudi Arabia. The recent excavations revealed significant findings, including well-preserved stone walls made from carefully cut granite blocks, some reinforced with mud bricks.

Al-Ma'mala is historically and commercially significant. It is located 13 kilometers east of Al-Aqiq Governorate and 45 kilometers from Al-Baha's capital. The site is near the ancient Elephant Road, a crucial trade route for caravans from southern Arabia before Islam. This road later became an important pilgrimage path during Islamic times, boosting local prosperity.

The stone walls discovered were adorned with plaster traces, showcasing ancient construction techniques. These walls varied in height from 50 to 120 centimeters and were 50 to 80 centimeters wide, reflecting sophisticated engineering and architectural skills of that era. Archaeologists identified two distinct architectural units at the site, offering insights into ancient lifestyles.

The structures featured well-defined spaces, indicating multiple uses and advanced architectural practices of that time. The excavation also uncovered a diverse range of artifacts: 230 pottery pieces with intricate geometric designs, 48 stone pieces, 26 colored glass fragments, 35 metal tools, and 17 stone tools. These findings suggest vibrant commercial and industrial activities at the site.

The Heritage Commission remains dedicated to comprehensive archaeological surveys across Saudi Arabia. By using advanced geographical surveying and field excavation techniques, the commission aims to uncover new antiquities and document them, highlighting the Kingdom's rich history. This commitment ensures a deeper understanding of Saudi Arabia's past.

Al-Ma'mala's proximity to the Elephant Road underscores its historical importance as a trade hub before Islam. Over time, this route evolved into a significant pilgrimage path during Islamic eras, contributing to the prosperity of nearby villages and cities. The site's strategic location played a vital role in its historical development.
