Heavy Rain And Lightning Strikes Across UAE Prompt Orange Weather Alert

In the early hours of Thursday morning, residents of Abu Dhabi and Dubai were awakened by heavy rain, thunder, and lightning. The skies were rumbling with lightning strikes around 3 AM, followed by a significant calm around 5 AM. However, the second wave of rainfall commenced just before 8 AM. The Northern Emirates also experienced rainfall later in the morning, indicating a widespread weather event across the UAE.

The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) has issued an orange alert, effective until 8 PM on Thursday, cautioning residents of hazardous weather conditions. In response, police departments in both Abu Dhabi and Dubai have emphasized the importance of cautious driving under these conditions. According to predictions by the Windy weather app, further rainfall is expected in both emirates, with an anticipation of easing conditions by approximately 7 PM.

This round of unstable weather, though severe, is reported to be less intense than the storms of Tuesday, April 26, which saw record rainfall disrupt public transport, flood roads and homes, and lead to the cancellation of over 1,200 flights at Dubai International Airport. In light of the expected conditions, the airport had advised passengers to verify their flight statuses and plan for potential traffic delays.

Preventive Measures and Adjustments

In preparation for the inclement weather, the UAE has taken proactive steps by advocating for remote work and distance learning for Thursday and Friday. The National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority issued this guidance on Wednesday for all educational institutions as well as public and private sector organizations. The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation further recommended private sector companies to adopt flexible and remote working arrangements for Thursday.

Distance learning directives had already been issued for all private schools in Dubai and Sharjah for these days due to the forecasted extreme weather conditions. It was also confirmed that government schools across the UAE would switch to remote learning for the same duration. Despite these adjustments, it has been learned that key examinations at some schools are set to proceed in-person.

The UAE's readiness to adapt to the challenges posed by severe weather demonstrates a comprehensive approach to ensuring the safety and continuity of education and work. As the country braces for more wet weather, the community's resilience and preparedness are highlighted amidst the unpredictability of natural events.
