UAE Healthcare Evolution Explored In New Book By Prof. Humaid Alshamsi At Abu Dhabi Global Health Week
During Abu Dhabi Global Health Week, Prof. Humaid Alshamsi, a prominent Emirati oncologist, introduced his new book, Healthcare in the United Arab Emirates. This publication provides an in-depth look at the UAE's healthcare system, detailing its development, accomplishments, and future plans across all seven emirates.
The launch event included a lively discussion between Prof. Dr. Humaid Al Shamsi, CEO of Burjeel Cancer Institute, and Dr. George Mathew. Known as "Matyous," Dr. Mathew was one of the first doctors to arrive in Abu Dhabi nearly 50 years ago and served in a public hospital in Al Ain. He has been honoured with the prestigious Abu Dhabi Award and recently had a road named after him in the capital.

The conversation attracted healthcare leaders, policymakers, academics, and professionals. It provided insights into the inspiration and research behind the book while encouraging discussions on the future of healthcare in the region. Prof. Dr. Humaid presented the first copy of his book to Dr. Mathew as a tribute to his lasting impact on UAE's medical history.
Prof. Dr. Humaid expressed his dedication to advancing healthcare in the UAE: "I have always been deeply committed to advancing healthcare in the UAE. Witnessing the rapid transformation of our system—its innovations, milestones, and the challenges we continue to face—motivated me to compile this resource." He aims to offer a roadmap that celebrates progress and inspires future improvements.
Edited by Prof. Dr. Humaid and written by experts from various fields like primary care and health informatics, this open-access book explores healthcare policies and innovative practices shaping both private and public sectors in the UAE. Endorsed by key organisations like the Emirates Oncology Society, it also covers topics such as AI in healthcare and medical tourism.
Dr. Mathew reflected on his experiences: "It has been a privilege to witness the transformation of healthcare in this country. This book is a testament to the dedication and vision of our leadership that continues to shape its future." His words highlight how leadership has played a crucial role in evolving healthcare.
Strategic Vision for Future
The event also featured a book signing session where attendees could meet Prof. Dr. Humaid personally. This is his second publication following Cancer Care in the UAE, which examines cancer care within the nation comprehensively.
John Sunil, Group CEO of Burjeel Holdings, praised Prof. Humaid’s work: "We are incredibly proud of Prof. Humaid’s achievement... It is a vital contribution that not only documents our current landscape but also charts a strategic course for the next 50 years." His statement underscores how this book aligns with their vision for transformative healthcare.
