Hazza Bin Zayed Inaugurates Innovation Oasis And Advance AgriTech Academy To Boost UAE Agriculture
H.H. Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in Al Ain Region, attended the opening of Silal’s Innovation Oasis (iO), a facility dedicated to agricultural technology research and development. This initiative aligns with the National Food Security Strategy 2051, aiming to promote sustainable farming and enhance the UAE's food security.
Spanning over 300,000 square metres, iO is a hub for collaboration among researchers, industry leaders, startups, and academics. The facility supports agritech innovations focusing on climate-resilient farming, controlled environment agriculture, and efficient food production. It serves as an incubator for new ideas in agriculture.
The iO facility is equipped with cutting-edge laboratories, growth chambers, and experimental setups like greenhouses and open-field plots. These resources provide a platform for developing and testing agritech solutions. Key areas include climate-resilient techniques to combat UAE's extreme temperatures and water-food-energy solutions using solar thermal desalination.
H.H. Sheikh Hazza also inaugurated the Advance AgriTech Academy. This academy aims to nurture future AgriTech leaders in the UAE by offering specialised programmes in career guidance and practical training. Collaborating with global research institutions ensures Emirati talent gains skills needed for innovation in food and agriculture.
A cooperation agreement was signed between Silal and the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) during the event. This partnership focuses on advancing agricultural research and innovation. Five scholarships will be offered to students from UAEU's College of Agriculture to empower them in agricultural sustainability and food security.
Salmeen Obaid Alameri, CEO of Silal, stated: "Innovation Oasis (iO) is redefining the future of agri-food in the UAE. By harnessing advanced technologies and fostering strategic partnerships, we are strengthening the resilience and sustainability of our food system. With a strong focus on research, innovation, and knowledge transfer, we are not only driving progress but also positioning the UAE at the forefront of global agritech solutions."
AI-Driven Solutions
The iO facility will explore AI-driven food systems using machine learning, robotics, and data analytics to improve farm management and post-harvest technologies. These innovations aim to enhance supply chain efficiency while minimising food waste through advanced technological integration.
H.H. Sheikh Hazza emphasised that investing in agritech research is crucial for advancing sustainable local production. He highlighted the importance of using advanced technologies to support innovation while building a knowledge-driven economy. Strengthening food supply chains is vital for addressing future regional and global food security challenges.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by notable figures including Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan; Zaki Anwar Nusseibeh; Professor Ahmed Ali Al Raeesi; Salmeen Obaid Al Ameri; Dr Mohammed Abdulmuhsen Salem Al Yafei; Humaid Al Rumaithi; and Dr Shamal Mohammed.
The launch of iO Advance AgriTech Academy further demonstrates Silal's commitment to developing local talent. This ensures that the UAE remains a leader in agricultural innovation globally by equipping individuals with necessary skills through education and training initiatives.
