H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in Al Dhafra Region and Chairman of the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), met with the organising team of the IUCN World Conservation Congress 2025. This event, held in Abu Dhabi in early October, attracted significant international participation from governments, experts, and stakeholders focused on nature and biodiversity conservation.
The congress was a platform for over 10,000 experts and representatives from 189 countries to discuss and vote on more than 200 proposals related to environmental protection and biodiversity conservation. It highlighted the UAE's global leadership in advancing nature-related actions. H.H. Sheikh Hamdan praised these outcomes, which underscored the UAE’s commitment to global environmental efforts.
Under President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan's leadership, the UAE remains dedicated to environmental protection through comprehensive policies and legislation. These efforts aim to safeguard species and natural habitats while encouraging community involvement in sustainability initiatives. The directive to expand nature reserves in Abu Dhabi to cover 20% of its area reflects this commitment.
The congress also launched several strategic initiatives supporting the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. These projects aim to accelerate international conservation efforts by 2030. Among them is Nature X Abu Dhabi, an initiative promoting advanced technologies for species protection and sustainable investments.
H.H. Sheikh Hamdan emphasised the importance of building on the congress's achievements by transforming its outcomes into practical initiatives with tangible impacts on nature conservation and sustainable development. He highlighted EAD's pioneering role in adopting innovative environmental solutions and expanding strategic partnerships for ecosystem sustainability.
The success of the congress was attributed to national institutions' collective efforts in unifying visions and strengthening cooperation between local and federal entities. This collaboration showcased the UAE’s practical commitment to protecting nature for current and future generations.
