GWU Launches National Programme To Empower Women's And Girls' Rights In The UAE
The General Women's Union (GWU) has initiated the first phase of a national programme focused on women's and girls' rights. This initiative is under the patronage of H.H. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, who holds several key positions, including Chairwoman of the GWU and President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood. The programme aims to enhance the capabilities of organisations in the UAE that focus on these rights.
Implemented with support from the UAE’s Permanent Committee on Human Rights and the UN Human Rights Regional Office for the Middle East and North Africa, this programme aligns with broader human rights efforts in the UAE. It is based on constitutional principles promoting equality and non-discrimination. Key legal frameworks include the Law Against Discrimination and Hatred of 2019 and Federal Decree-Law No. (13) of 2024 concerning domestic violence protection.
The UAE's commitment to international treaties is evident through its adherence to agreements like CEDAW since 2004, as well as its alignment with the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. The nation also follows its National Action Plan for implementing UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security. These commitments underscore a dedication to advancing women's rights globally.
Noura Al Suwaidi, Secretary-General of GWU, highlighted that this national programme embodies the UAE's steadfast vision to uplift women and girls. "This vision," she stated, "is driven by the directives of the nation’s wise leadership and the continued support and guidance of H.H. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, who remains a steadfast advocate for women’s empowerment across all sectors."
This initiative reflects a broader strategy to empower women within various sectors in society. By focusing on capacity building among civil society organisations, it seeks to create an environment where women's rights are actively promoted and protected.
The programme's launch marks a significant step towards strengthening women's roles in society while ensuring their rights are upheld according to both national laws and international standards. This effort highlights ongoing progress in gender equality within the UAE.
