Gulf Studies Forum Explores Arab Gulf's Transition To Diversified Economy
Trends Research and Advisory recently participated in the Gulf Studies symposium, a collaborative event organized by the Gulf International Forum, the Gulf Research Centre, and the Centre for Contemporary Arab Studies at Georgetown University in Washington, DC. This symposium served as a platform to explore the myriad opportunities and challenges confronting the Arab Gulf countries across various sectors, with a particular focus on energy policy and the transition towards a post-oil era.
During this event, Trends presented a comprehensive research paper that delved into the strategies and policies adopted by countries in the region concerning energy diversification. This paper shed light on the transition from a reliance on oil and gas revenues to fostering a more diversified economic landscape. It underscored the challenges and opportunities inherent in the GCC's energy transition, including the imperative to diminish hydrocarbon dependence, mitigate social and economic impacts of this transition, and encourage innovation within the energy sector.

The Trends delegation, comprising Sultan Al Rubaei, Deputy Head of Research and Advisory, Jena Bou Serhal, and Dr. Serhat Çüpokoglu, Senior researcher at Trends Research and Advisory, put forth several recommendations to address these challenges. They advocated for increased investment in education and training, fostering local businesses and stimulating the private sector, and augmenting the share of renewable and nuclear energy within the energy mix.
In a subsequent session at the forum, Dr. Christian Alexander from Trends discussed the evolution of small states' foreign policy. He outlined a shift from traditional approaches to adopting a bold and diverse strategy characterized by "complete networking." Dr. Alexander highlighted significant regional events that have influenced foreign policy decisions among small states, noting their move towards proactive engagement in regional geopolitics.
The Gulf Studies Forum is an annual event held in Washington that concentrates on studies pertinent to the Gulf region. The workshops cover an extensive range of topics including geopolitics, Gulf-US politics, defence, Gulf foreign policy, energy policy, economy, society, and culture. The GCC states are making strides in their energy transition by enhancing the share of renewable energy in their energy mix, investing in new technologies and industries, and maintaining their significance as key players in global energy geopolitics.
This symposium not only highlighted the current state of affairs but also paved the way for future discussions on how best to navigate the transition towards sustainable energy sources while ensuring economic stability and growth for the GCC countries. The insights shared by Trends Research and Advisory underscored the importance of strategic planning and innovation in overcoming challenges associated with this transition.
