GCC Secretary-General Highlights Evolving Gulf-British Partnership Based On Trust And Cooperation
Jasem Albudaiwi, Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), highlighted the enduring partnership between the Gulf and Britain, rooted in cooperation and trust. He anticipates a future built on shared interests and values. His comments were made during a speech at the British Parliament in London, attended by lords, officials, experts, and legislators.
Albudaiwi began by expressing gratitude to Lord McNicol, Member of the House of Lords and UK's Trade Envoy to Jordan, Kuwait, and the Palestinian Territories. He appreciated Lord McNicol's role in enhancing GCC-UK relations. The secretary-general noted that their relationship has evolved into a comprehensive partnership involving political coordination, security cooperation, cultural exchange, and economic ties.

The ongoing Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations between the GCC and the UK hold strategic importance. These talks have progressed significantly due to mutual commitment. Albudaiwi believes finalising this agreement will expand opportunities for trade, investment, and innovation in areas like clean energy and digital services.
He stated that this agreement would connect the GCC's developmental changes with the UK's global economic strengths. "It will also contribute to linking the ambitious developmental transformations in the GCC countries with the global economic capabilities of the UK," he stated.
The Gulf-British partnership extends beyond economics. It is grounded in shared principles such as dialogue, respect for international law, and collaboration for global security and stability. Albudaiwi emphasised joint efforts against extremism and support for peace and development worldwide.
Albudaiwi's remarks underscore a shift from traditional cooperation to a broader partnership encompassing various sectors. This evolution reflects both sides' dedication to strengthening their ties through diverse collaborations.
