In a recent severe weather event, Guangzhou, the bustling capital of Guangdong province, was hit by a tornado on Saturday, with the Guangdong provincial meteorological bureau classifying its intensity as that of a strong tornado. This natural disaster has prompted an immediate response from authorities, with a team of experts dispatched for on-site disaster assessments and initial investigations across the tornado's path, which spanned over 1.7 kilometres.

The tornado's impact was most acutely felt in the city's Baiyun district around 15:30 CST, where it left a trail of destruction in its wake. The aftermath of this calamitous event has been devastating, with five lives lost and 33 individuals sustaining injuries. The extent of material damage is also significant, with 141 factory and residential buildings either destroyed or damaged, as reported by local officials in Baiyun district.

Accompanied by downpours, hailstones, thunder, and lightning, the tornado also disrupted power supply in Zhongluotan and Taihe townships within the district, leaving numerous local residents without electricity. The occurrence of this year's tornado is attributed to the strengthening warm and humid airflow from the southwest of the South China Sea. This airflow has been transporting a substantial amount of water vapour and energy to Guangzhou, setting the stage for such extreme weather conditions.

The Guangdong provincial meteorological bureau's report highlights the scale of the tornado's impact, with a maximum width of approximately 280 metres along its path.
