Green Tech Plus Lecture Highlights Future Of Sustainable Development And Renewable Energy
His Highness Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan attended a lecture titled ‘Green Tech Plus: Towards a Future of Sustainable Development’. This event, organised by the Majlis Mohamed bin Zayed, marked 40 years of UAE-China diplomatic relations. It was held at Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and featured Charles Liu from the City University of Macau.
The lecture explored green technology's current landscape and China's role in this field. Liu discussed transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources like hydro, wind, solar, and potentially nuclear fusion. He highlighted China's significant progress in solar and wind capacity, which grew by over 50% last year.
Liu explained that China's large domestic market allows it to achieve economies of scale, reducing costs for new renewable capacities compared to other countries. "Solar is now cheaper than coal," he stated, noting that solar costs have dropped 90% over the past decade. By 2028, China aims to contribute nearly 60% of new global renewable energy capacity.
The lecture also emphasised the potential collaboration between the UAE and China in green technology. Liu praised the UAE’s leadership vision and its resources in AI and capital deployment. He expressed hope for joint efforts to accelerate green tech adoption globally.
Moderated by Omar Al Hashmi from TAQA, the session included pre-recorded inputs from various industry leaders. Khaled Al Huraimel of BEEAH Group, Eng Aisha Al Abdooli from the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, Eng Waleed Salman from Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, and Alya Al Mazrouei from the National Centre of Meteorology shared their insights.
The lecture will be broadcast on local TV networks on Saturday, 28th September at 5 pm. It will also be available on the Majlis Mohamed bin Zayed YouTube channel for later viewing.
