Abu Dhabi’s Green Spaces And Public Transport Propel City To Fifth In 2025 IMD Smart City Index

Abu Dhabi has made significant strides in becoming a smart city, moving from tenth to fifth place in the 2025 IMD Smart City Index. This improvement is attributed to its green spaces, free public Wi-Fi, efficient public transport, and effective traffic management. The city has surpassed several major world capitals in this ranking.

The city's public transport system is highly appreciated by residents, with 82 percent expressing satisfaction. Over 90 million rides were recorded on public buses last year, and more than 168,000 passengers used the water transportation network. Traffic congestion is not a major issue for over half of the residents surveyed.

Abu Dhabi Rises to Fifth in Smart City Index

In 2024, the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) invested AED3.4 billion in mobility and road projects. A notable project was a double-bridge initiative that reduced morning peak-hour delays by up to 80 percent on Al Khaleej Al Arabi Street. These efforts have significantly improved the city's infrastructure.

Green Spaces and Smart Parks

Green spaces play a crucial role in Abu Dhabi's smart city status. About 84 percent of residents are satisfied with the availability and maintenance of parks. In 2024 alone, over 200 parks and beaches were opened. The department also upgraded seven parks with interconnected sensors to enhance visitor experience and sustainability.

Connectivity and Accessibility

Free public Wi-Fi is another key factor contributing to Abu Dhabi's high ranking. Nearly 75 percent of respondents highlighted its importance in accessing public services. The DMT provides Wi-Fi on buses, at beaches, and in parks through Hala Wi-Fi, enhancing connectivity across the city.

Mohamed Ali Al Shorafa, Chairman of DMT, stated that Abu Dhabi's rise in smart city rankings from 14th place in 2020 to fifth this year is a significant achievement for the entire city. He noted that this recognition underscores the success of their comprehensive government approach as they continue to grow.

The IMD survey evaluates cities based on residents' perceptions of their infrastructure and technology. Abu Dhabi's connectivity has played a significant role in its top-five ranking. The capital now hosts the World Smart Sustainable Cities Organisation’s MENA regional office, positioning it as a hub for collaboration and knowledge-sharing.

Abu Dhabi Canvas was launched last year to beautify public areas while celebrating local culture using UAE-based talent. This initiative aligns with the department's commitment to innovation and community welfare, further enhancing the city's aesthetic appeal.

The department remains dedicated to advancing Abu Dhabi's status as a smart city. This commitment positions the Emirate as a leader in sustainable urban development across the region through cutting-edge technologies and strategic initiatives.
